Duration: August 12 – August 28 (16 days)
Program Cost: $1020 USD
Location: Fokoue Village, Cameroon
Amrita-Seattle, FARES, and University of Dschang, aims to co-ordinate and execute a 2.5 week long (16 days) program on climate change, environmental sustainability and awareness at Fokoué Bilingual High School in rural western Cameroon to help conserve the rainforests and wetlands, which are fast disappearing.
At the core of the program is the implantation of the Green School, a space where all students’ collaborative creative work takes place. Working in groups, students will develop and execute projects from design conception to final prototyping and present their work to the community and to a select group of guest critics. The program will be built upon four main platforms: Lecture series, Hands-on Projects, Fieldwork, and Site Visits.
Daily lectures will be given by project leaders on various environmental topics such as: “The Economy of Happiness”, climate change, deforestation and erosion, water cycle, methods for adopting sustainable agriculture, renewable energy resources, sea-level rise, polar icecaps, etc.
Program participants along with high school students will engage in various hands-on project and fieldwork assignments, such as: preparing the Environmental “Exchange-Box”, organizing student-led Earth Club and community garden, installing rainwater barrels, “Saving Earth” Essay & Art Context, painting wall murals with workshop themes, Site visit to Ekom-Nakam Rainforest to learn about conservation, and rainforest ecology.
There will be options to extend your time in the village and continue more with the program, or to arrange additional time for trekking. This year, we are offering the famous Mount Cameroon trek (4 -5 days).
