Amrita-Seattle’s volunteers went to Nepal a week after the 2015 earthquakes to do relief work. We reached some of the remote villages near Sindhupalchowk and Bhaktapur and stayed throughout the aftershocks period and distributed blankets and other relief material, and helped cook hot meals in the camps for two weeks. Our volunteers also worked in Katmandu’s earthquake shelter areas to cook meals for several thousands victims at a time.
Nepal’s education system was devastated after the 2015 Earthquake. Upon returning to the US after immediate relief work, Amrita-Seattle took a vow to go back to Nepal in 2016 to build a school.
IN April 2016, Amrita-Seattle in partnership with local NGO- Kathmandu Environmental Education Project (KEEP), built a 4 classrooms and fully-furnished library in Shree Nalang Patle Secondary School, Nalang ward no 4, at Dhading district, Nepal. This school was originally established 53 years ago, beautifully located on a saddle between mid-hills, with Gurung as the ethnic majority living with other groups. This community have a limited source of income for living, which is agro-based, and mostly for subsistence. Nonetheless, they always have dreams to educate their children in good schools but it has never been possible to date.
The school, we built is located in one of the areas most affected by April 25, 2015 earthquake. In this locality more than 60% houses were destroyed. In this school, some class rooms have been damaged beyond repair. Consequently, zinc sheeted temporary classrooms were made to continue classes. Some sections of the old structure are salvageable. To sum up, this school had a need for a more permanent structure along with repairs to the old facility to accommodate 380 students.

Volunteers will also help set-up a pre-school classroom with interactive learning materials and paint the walls with murals to make it attractive for the children.
